The (Classical) Northern Upright Luxury Chess Pieces - 4.5" King - From the Camaratta Collection

A Distinguished Revival of an Early Victorian Masterpiece

The House of Staunton is delighted to present an exceptional achievement in historical reproduction - The (Classical) Northern Upright Luxury Chess Pieces. Expertly researched and executed by Frank Camaratta, this superb set has been meticulously crafted from Natural Boxwood and lustrous Ebony, faithfully capturing the refinement and stately elegance of the original mid-19th-century design. The King rises to an impressive 4-1/2" height with a 1-1/2" diameter base, offering a commanding presence that immediately distinguishes this set among the finest of the Pre-Staunton era.

Each Chess piece is heavily weighted and rests securely upon plush green billiard cloth base pads, while the Kings are further elevated atop gold-embossed Black English leather pads - a luxurious hallmark reserved for our most prestigious recreations.

As part of the esteemed Frank Camaratta Signature and Pre-Staunton Series, this exquisite reproduction embodies the perfect blend of historical fidelity, artisanal craftsmanship, and masterful execution that have become synonymous with The House of Staunton.

A Bit of History

The Northern Upright Tournament Chessmen - often referred to as the Edinburgh (or Edinboro) pattern - represent one of the most iconic and influential designs within the family of English Playing sets. This distinguished category also included the famed Saint George, Lund, and Calvert patterns, all of which flourished during the early and mid-Victorian period. These elegant forms dominated English chess culture until they were ultimately supplanted by the revolutionary Staunton Chessmen, introduced to the public in September of 1849.

Designed around 1840 by Lord John Hay, the Northern Upright style quickly became a favorite among players and manufacturers alike. Variants of this design were produced by many of the era’s finest craftsmen - including Dixon, Thomas and William Lund, John Calvert, George Merrifield, and even John Jaques. The present reproduction is based specifically on the Northern Upright sets produced by George Merrifield, whose crisp lines and balanced silhouettes exemplified the very best of the design.

The Northern Upright pattern holds an especially cherished place in chess history, immortalized in the iconic image of American Champion Paul Morphy, who is famously depicted holding a Northern Upright King. This graceful and historically significant design remains a testament to the aesthetic brilliance and enduring legacy of the pre-Staunton era.
