The Northern Upright Tournament Chessmen - often referred to as the Edinburgh (or Edinboro) pattern - represent one of the most iconic and influential designs within the family of English Playing sets. This distinguished category also included the famed Saint George, Lund, and Calvert patterns, all of which flourished during the early and mid-Victorian period. These elegant forms dominated English chess culture until they were ultimately supplanted by the revolutionary Staunton Chessmen, introduced to the public in September of 1849.
Designed around 1840 by Lord John Hay, the Northern Upright style quickly became a favorite among players and manufacturers alike. Variants of this design were produced by many of the era’s finest craftsmen - including Dixon, Thomas and William Lund, John Calvert, George Merrifield, and even John Jaques.
